National Recognition Through OECM

In early 2026, Wattlebewillbe applied for recognition under Australia’s National Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECM) Framework.

OECMs recognise areas that achieve long-term biodiversity conservation outcomes, even where conservation is not the sole management objective. Unlike traditional protected areas, the framework acknowledges the important role that privately managed and working landscapes can play in supporting nature conservation and landscape connectivity.

Wattlebewillbe’s application has received preliminary approval and remains under assessment while the implications of the Federal Government’s emerging Nature Repair Market — particularly the proposed Protect and Conserve method and its relationship with OECM recognition — become clearer.

If recognised, the designation would highlight Wattlebewillbe’s ongoing contribution to biodiversity conservation through active land stewardship, ecological restoration, and long-term habitat protection on a small-scale private property.

*Wattlebewillbe is a 22-hectare Wildlife Land Trust sanctuary in the Brigalow Belt, managed for conservation and ecological restoration since 2010. Previously cleared for intensive grazing and timber harvesting, it is now being restored as a regenerative conservation landscape that integrates low-impact food production with biodiversity recovery, with a particular focus on habitat for the endangered greater glider.
